Hwy. 402 remains closed due to whiteouts & crashes

Provincial Highway 402 remains closed from Highway 401 to Nauvoo Road in Lambton County, OPP officials say.

Road clearing operations continued throughout the night facilitating the morning commute along secondary roads in the area.

Motorists are reminded to exercise caution when traveling on alternate roads due to slippery conditions and diminished visibility from blowing snow, police say.

As a result of yesterday’s weather system, several motorists became stranded in the Strathroy area.

The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc opened the doors to the Gemini Sportsplex and activated a warming centre with the support of the Salvation Army.

Approximately 45 persons, a dog and fish were hosted at the warming centre overnight.

Provincial Highway 402 is anticipated to be closed until noon today to facilitate snow clearing and the removal of vehicles that were abandoned for the night.

“Road conditions in the area remain a challenge and motorists are asked to refrain from unnecessary travel on roads around Strathroy and Watford,” stated Const. Max Gomez, Middlesex OPP Media Relations Officer, in a press release.

“Please do not call the OPP for road conditions. Road conditions are available by calling 511 and connecting with OPP and MTO social media platforms.”

Middlesex OPP is reminding motorists to obey the road closure signs and barriers.

Driving on a Closed Road is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act.
