Be careful how you think

From The Pastor’ Pen – By Brian Horrobin

The late Henry Ford is credited with making the statement, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”

We act on what our mind decides, so the way we think about something is of paramount importance.

I remember back when I was in high school how terrified I would get when called upon to speak in front of the class.

I would hear other students with their eloquent presentations and think of how silly I probably sounded.

But then I changed my attitude.

As a tactic to get through it, I started saying to myself, “Hey, this isn’t a big deal. You can do this.”

Amazingly, it began to get easier.

In fact, I even started liking it!

Never in my wildest dreams back then did I ever think I would end up in a vocation that revolves around public speaking.

Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as he thinks within himself, so he is.”

You can surround yourself with people who encourage you and affirm what you are doing, but if you do not think the same way you cannot succeed.

Of course, we also need to be careful of the opposite problem, which is thinking too highly of ourselves.

Scripture warns in Romans 12:3 “not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.”

So, do some thinking this week about how you think, because what you think will determine the course of your actions.
