Man charged for using counterfeit money

A man has been charged with allegedly using counterfeit money in Chatham.

Police officials allege that on February 20, 2018 a man attended Petro Canada on Park Avenue in Chatham and made two separate purchases using $20 U.S. bills.

Police were notified after the fact when a store employee identified the bills as being counterfeit.

Both bills had the same serial #JB44CYBEHNP with the backwards ‘N’ which is derived from the Russian Cyrillic Alphabet, police say.

Through video surveillance images, the man was identified.

Yesterday morning, police located the man and he was arrested.

A 36-year-old Chatham man has been charged with possessing counterfeit money, two counts of uttering counterfeit money and failing to comply with his release conditions by attending Petro Canada.

He was transported to the court house for a bail hearing.

He was released with conditions pending a future court date of March 23, 2018.
