Gateway Casinos is building a new ‘Cascades’ branded casino at 615 Richmond Street, the site of the former Wheel’s Inn in Chatham. Construction is expected to begin this spring, once provincial and municipal approvals are obtained. While the construction of the new casino is underway in Chatham, Gateway Casinos Dresden will continue to operate, business as usual.

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched for a Wallaceburg boy, who is battling an unknown issue with his liver. 11-month-old boy Jevon Marchand was brought to the hospital due to vomiting and a high fever back in January. Fast forward to March and doctors are still trying to figure out what is wrong with the young boy.

An investigation has been launched after an early morning fire on Wednesday in Wallaceburg. Fire officials say a blaze at the apartment at 4 Reaume Avenue is under investigation and the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management have been notified. There is no damage estimate or cause at this time.

Chatham-Kent council awarded a $4.9M tender to Clarke Construction Inc. for the Elgin Street Reconstruction in Wallaceburg. Construction should start in April and be completed by the end of September of this year.

A report is coming back to council about some upgrades for a section of roads located just outside of Wallaceburg. North Kent Coun. Joe Faas entered a successful motion to have staff look into improving Snye Road, Seys Line and Island View Road.

A total of 26 community projects and events have qualified for a total of more than $132,000 in funding through Chatham-Kent’s annual Community Partnership Fund. The fund was established by council in 2000 as a grant program which uses matching funding to promote community development projects within the municipality.

And finally… the Carlyn Manufacturing Senior Star Search singing competition wrapped up last Friday night at the CBD Club in Wallaceburg. Coming out on top as the champion was Liz Colby. Michael Francis finished in second place, followed by Bill Thibeault in third and Grandville Boutilier in fourth.
