Chatham-Kent police launch new bicycle registry

Chief Gary Conn

The Chatham-Kent Police Service has created a Bicycle Registry to assist in the identification and recovery of stolen or found bicycles.

Local bicycle retailers will be provided with information cards to promote the Bicycle Registry. Citizens are encouraged to register all their bicycles, new and old.

The Bicycle Registry will guide you through a step by step process which is easy to follow and includes the ability to upload a photo.

“We recover hundreds of stolen and abandoned bicycles every year but are often unable to identify the owner because the theft has not been reported,” stated Chief Gary Conn.

“The Bicycle Registry was developed as part of our on-going efforts to reduce property crime in our community. The Registry will increase the chances of having your bicycle returned to you should it be lost or stolen and recovered by our Police Service.”

Constable Renee Cowell added: “We also recommend that you invest in a good quality lock and secure your bicycle and wheels to an object that cannot be easily cut or broken. Most bicycles come marked with a serial number or have distinguishing features – record these. If your bicycle does not have a serial number, engrave an identifying number on the frame. You can also mark your wheels and components with the same number to make it even easier for us to identify it.”

To register your bicycle:

– You MUST have a valid e-mail address and provide the bicycle serial number, make, style, and colour.

– The Chatham-Kent Police Service Bicycle Registry is for residents of Chatham-Kent only.

– Once you’ve completed the online registration information and it is received by the Chatham-Kent Police Service you will receive email confirmation.
