Value vs. Success

Drew Brees

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

My friends at the Wallaceburg Rotary Club posted a great quote recently from Albert Einstein: “Try not to become a man of success but a man of value.”

Such sage advice, however, flies in the face of what most people are pursuing today.

Often, when one aspires to be a person of value, they also achieve success.

A good example of that is Drew Brees, the quarterback of the NFL’s New Orleans Saints.

It is well-documented that Brees is proactive in helping the people of New Orleans, often giving sacrificially of both time and money.

Recently, during the busy NFL playoff time, he took his wife, Brittany, and their young family to test out the newly-built playground that his foundation provided for those with special needs.

The all-inclusive play area includes wheelchair-accessible equipment and a zip line that doesn’t require arm strength.

Their goal was to provide a facility where people of all ages and abilities could play side by side.

Regardless of Brees’ success on the field, and he has enjoyed much of that, it is his reputation for being a man of value that will be most remembered.

Jesus taught such principles to His followers.

You can never go wrong when you put the concerns and needs of others ahead of your own.
