WDSS 7/8 students take part in ‘Chef à l’école’ program

Students in Wallaceburg District Secondary School’s Grade 7/8 program learned about french cuisine, music and culture on Tuesday, as three classes took part in the Chef à l’école program.

Kate Fisher, the core french teacher for the WDSS Grade 7/8 program, told the Sydenham Current Chef à l’école is a new concept of teaching designed to help boost students’ enthusiasm for learning the French language.

“A french chef comes in and teaches the students how to bake different types of food,” she said.

“They are learning how to make a chocolate lava cake. While they’re doing that they’re using the french vocabulary that we’ve seen in class. They’re also getting learn a bit about the french history and listen to the french music. It’s bringing in that french culture in a very engaging, interactive and authentic activity.”

Fisher said this was the first time the Chef à l’école program was held at WDSS, but some students have took part in it at A.A. Wright and H.W. Burgess in Wallaceburg.

“It’s a fun way to get them learning that french language because it is not always everyone’s favourite subject,” Fisher said.

“It makes it very engaging for them because they are working with their friends, it’s hands on, it’s unique in the sense that they don’t normally do something like this, but they are still getting that exposure to the french language by listening to the vocabulary with me in class and listening to the chef themselves.”

Students from Mrs. Van Damme’s class, Mrs. Blair’s class and Ms. Richard’s class took part in the program on Tuesday.
