The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) and St. Clair Region Conservation Foundation (SCRCF) has decided to cancel the annual Sydenham Canoe and Kayak Race, scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 22, 2018.

SCRCA officials say the decision was made early Wednesday morning after staff reviewed water levels in the Sydenham River.

“Like many water ways in southern Ontario, the Sydenham River has been experiencing high levels and localized flooding caused by the unusually harsh spring storm that impacted our region over the weekend,” stated Sharon Nethercott, Race Coordinator, in a media release.

“As a result, site conditions at both the start and finish lines will not be useable in time for the race on Sunday.”

The annual race is recognized by the Ontario Marathon Canoe Kayak Racing Association and serves as a fundraiser to support conservation education programs delivered by the SCRCA.
