A 25-year-old Wallaceburg woman, who has been charged with first-degree murder, appeared in a Chatham courtroom via video on Wednesday. Kourtny Audette told the court her new lawyer is Laura Joy, who was not present in the packed courtroom. She did make a request through duty counsel for the matter to return back to bail court next week to review disclosure. Audette’s appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, May 9 at 10:30 a.m. In the meantime, she will remain in custody. Police continue to investigate the alleged April 18th incident, where Nicholas Laprise, a 24-year-old man from Dover, was pronounced dead at the scene on Book Street in Wallaceburg.

The OPP have arrested and charged a Lambton woman in relation to the death of a 29-year-old man on April 29 in Warwick Township. Police say as a result of the investigation, a woman, who cannot be named due to a Publication Ban, has been charged with second degree murder. She appeared in court this week and remains in custody. The investigation is ongoing.

The former chief of Walpole Island and the pastor of the Walpole Island Evangelistic Centre, has died. Pastor Joseph Gilbert passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, April 30. He was 74. He was the Chief of Walpole Island First Nation for six terms. His funeral will be celebrated at the Walpole Island Sports Complex at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Nominations opened up this week across Chatham-Kent for the 2018 Municipal Election. Putting their name in the hat and running for Mayor of Chatham-Kent is Chatham Coun. Darrin Canniff and Alysson Storey. In Wallaceburg, Counc. Carmen McGregor filed her papers and will be seeking re-election and Nick Cadotte is also running in Wallaceburg. Election Day is October 22nd.

McHappy Day was held this week in support of Ronald McDonald Houses and other local children’s charities. In Chatham-Kent alone, a total of $28,127 was raised for the event.

Wendy Miller had reason to celebrate this week… 50,000 reasons in fact. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission announced this week that the Wallaceburg woman had won $50,000 in the April 28, LOTTO 6/49 draw. Miller purchased the ticket at Taylor’s Variety in Wallaceburg.

Greenfield Global made a $2,500 donation this week to the Defiance Running Club’s Reading Program. Mark Childs says here are 11 schools with over 2,000 children participating in the program this year. The money is used to buy books at each school.

And finally…

The Lions Club is collecting e-waste this weekend in Wallaceburg. Hugo Ramos, a club member, says the Lions are collecting the items as a fundraiser through Recycle My Electronics. The group will be at the Sydenham Curling Club on Saturday from 11-5 and Sunday from 11-3.
