Ineligible candidates for 2018 election, nominations rolling in

The nominations are starting to roll in for the 2018 Municipal Election in Chatham-Kent.

However, there is a list of names you won’t be seeing on the ballot this year, as they are ineligible to run.

The Municipality has posted the following notice on their website:

Steve Brent and Reno Lachapelle ran for mayor back in 2014. Bruce Caldwell, Mark Holman and Lynn O’Brien were seeking a council spot in Ward 6 – Chatham, Mona Natvik was running for council in Ward 3 – East Kent and Mike Genge had been running for a trustee position with the St. Clair Catholic District School Board in Ward 6 – Chatham. Holly Lynne Sullivan, had announced she was running in West Kent – Ward 1, but withdrew her nomination.

After the nomination period opened up for the 2018 election, a handful of incumbents and newcomers have put their names forward.

Chatham Coun. Darrin Canniff and Alysson Storey have entered the race to become Chatham-Kent’s next mayor. Meanwhile, reports say current Chatham-Kent mayor Randy Hope has said he plans on filing his papers in late July and will seek a fourth term.

In Ward 5 – Wallaceburg, current Coun. Carmen McGregor has filed her papers and has newcomer Nick Cadotte. Coun. Jeff Wesley has stated he will not be seeking re-election this year.

In Ward 4 – North Kent, no one, including incumbents Leon Leclair and Joe Faas, have filed their papers yet.

In Ward 6 – Chatham, incumbent Doug Sulman has entered the race, along with newcomers Chris June, Kirk Hooker, Drew Simpson and Karen Kirkwood-Whyte. There are six spots to fill in Ward 6.

In Ward 3 – West Kent, incumbents Steve Pinsonneault and David VanDamme are seeking re-election and have filed their nomination papers.

In Ward 2 – South Kent, incumbent Frank Vercouteren has filed his papers. Newcomer Henry Svec is seeking one of three council spots in South Kent.

In Ward 1 – West Kent, incumbents Bryon Fluker and Mark Authier are looking to keep their spots arounf the council horseshoe.

Nominations opened on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 and will close on Nomination Day, Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2 p.m.

Nominations are to be filed with the Clerk’s Office, at the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre, 315 King St W.

Election day is October 22, 2018.
