Thames-Sydenham and Region first annual progress report released

The Thames-Sydenham and Region was established as a result of the Walkerton water tragedy of 2000, which claimed the lives of seven people and sickened over 2,000.

To protect municipal sources of drinking water, the Clean Water Act was passed in 2006 and 19 regional Source Protection Committees were established in Ontario to develop local policies.

On September 17, 2015, the Source Protection Plan for the Thames-Sydenham and Region was approved by Glen Murray, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, and implementation of the policies within the Plan took effect December 31, 2015.

In its first report to the Government of Ontario, the Thames-Sydenham and Region outlines progress of policy implementation during the first two years of the Plan.

Another donation to new animal shelter

Maple City Homes has donated $10,000 to the new $2.3 million animal shelter soon to be under construction on Park Avenue East in Chatham.

The firm is donating $500 from the sale of each home sold on Summerset Place to the shelter which has been approved for construction by Chatham-Kent council.

During a ceremony this morning at the new location for Maple City Homes, 53 St Clair St, Chatham, Maple City officials challenged other builders to take part in what was called “a great project” of interest to many Chatham-Kent residents.

The Friends of the New Animal Shelter group has more than $900,000 in funding committed to the shelter which will be completed in a matter of months.
