Flight from police charges laid in Chatham

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: On May 4, 2024 a member of the Chatham-Kent Police was on general patrol in Chatham.

The onboard licence plate reader alerted the officer to a motor vehicle with an unauthorized licence plate.

The driver of the vehicle was known to the officer and was identified as an unlicensed 31-year-old Chatham man.

As the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop the suspect fled in the motor vehicle.

A pursuit was not initiated as the suspect had been identified.

Patrol officers attended the area where it was believed the suspect would go and where an arrest could be made without the risk of a pursuit.

The suspect was located hiding behind a local business and taken into custody without incident.

The suspect was held pending bail and charged with the following: Flight From Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Uttering Threats to Kill.

The suspect was on bail prior to this occurrence; facing 21 criminal charges including uttering threats to kill, uttering threats to destroy property, assault, assault with a weapon, mischief and theft.
