Update at 3:05 p.m. – A special weather statement has ended and a severe thunderstorm watch is now in place across Chatham-Kent.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain,” forecasters say.
“Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue forming late this afternoon and into this evening. Local rainfall amounts of 20 to 30 mm are possible this afternoon and early this evening due to these slow moving showers and thunderstorms.”
“Hail is also possible. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.”
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall, Environment Canada officials say.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
