The “Your Roots Are Always in Chatham-Kent” initiative celebrates the achievements of students across Chatham-Kent, graduating from secondary and post-secondary education.

Each graduating class is commemorated with a tree planted in their honour on campus or at a Municipal park close to their school.

In the 2017 Chatham-Kent to the Power of Young People Survey (15-39 years old), conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s Community Attraction and Promotion area, 93% of respondents said that they would like to remain connected to Chatham-Kent regardless of where they live and what they do in the future, an increase from 84% who said the same in 2012.

The “Your Roots Are Always in Chatham-Kent” initiative highlights the connection that each student has to Chatham-Kent, memorialized by a plaque at the base of each tree.

“This initiative is an excellent opportunity for our community to demonstrate support and appreciation for our young people as they move on to their next venture in life, and to express our hopes that those young people will choose to come baCK to Chatham-Kent to continue to build their careers and lives in the future,” says Audrey Ansell, Community Attraction and Promotion Manager.

Delaney Hart, who is graduating from École secondaire de Pain Court this year and is a member of the CK to the Power of Young People Advisory Group agrees and says, “the Your Roots tree is a really great reminder us that Chatham-Kent is our home and that we have a community supporting us, no matter where we go.”

Tree planting ceremonies will take place for all participating schools, with the involvement of staff and students.

Ceremonies have already taken place this week in Dresden, Blenheim and Pain Court.

Here are the remaining ceremonies taking place:

All members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend.
