Heavy rain possible for Tuesday

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch and a special weather statement, on top of the heat warning that has already been in place.

Forecasters say conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain on Tuesday, July 2.

“Thunderstorms are forecast to develop late this afternoon or early this evening,’ Environment Canada officials stated.

“The main concern with these thunderstorms will be heavy rainfall accumulations of 50 mm per hour and strong wind gusts to 90 km/h.”

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

As part of the special weather statement, forecasters say heavy rain is possible today.

“Showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across the area early this afternoon. These showers and thunderstorms will have the potential to produce heavy rainfall accumulations in the 20 to 40 mm range, with locally higher amounts.”

After this initial band of precipitation, additional showers and thunderstorms will be possible late this afternoon into this evening, Environment Canada officials stated.
