Kitchen fire causes $25,000 damage

Cooking is to blame for a fire in Chatham on Thursday, October 3.

Firefighters in Chatham responded to 534 St Clair Street in Chatham at around 6:20 p.m.

“Fire Crews from Station 1& 2 arrived on scene to a kitchen fire reported in a residence,” fire officials stated.

“Firefighters entered the home to quickly extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading beyond the kitchen. Fire crews remained on scene monitoring conditions and clearing heavy smoke from the residents. Mother and child escaped without injury.”

Damage is pegged at $25,000.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind residents to never leave cooking food on the stovetop unattended, and keep a close eye on food cooking inside the oven.

“Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles… i.e. potholders, towels, rags, drapes and food packaging,” fire officials stated.

“Keep children and pets away from cooking areas by creating a three-foot ‘kidā€“free zone’ around the stove. Turn pot handles inward so they canā€™t be bumped and children canā€™t grab them.”
