‘Like/dislike’ relationship with autumn

By Glen Turner – Special to the Sydenham Current

Fall. Autumn. Hmmmm…

I have a love/hate – no, too strong… ‘like/dislike’ view of this time of year.

I like the productivity of the fields and orchards… but dislike the END of such bounty.

I like the fall flowers… but dislike the fact that they’ll be gone soon.

I love the changing colours of the trees… but hate to see the leaves DROPPING!

I like the green of fall… but hate to see the brown starting to creep in.

I like to still be able to wear shorts and sandals… but don’t like unpacking the ‘winter wear’.

I like hanging laundry out to dry… but dislike the idea of that ending soon.

I like cutting my lawn at this time of year… but HATE the idea of having to test out my snow-blower soon.

The signals are all there, too. Autumn is upon us.

For me, #1 is the soybean fields turning brown.

Then, the end of the sweet corn.

And the appearance of fall mums.

Also, the conversations turn to forecasts – ‘Have you seen the Farmer’s Almanac?’ or ‘The Weather Network is calling for…’

Like I said… love/hate, like/dislike…

Best get used to it, huh?
