McKeough Dam in operation, flood warning continues

The McKeough Dam is in operation as a flood warning continues across the region.

St. Clair Region Conservation Authority officials say flooding is occurring in Wallaceburg and across the watershed.

“Upwards of 75mm of rain have been received in some areas across the watershed,” SCRCA officials say.

“Water levels are high across the area, with many locations seeing inundation into natural floodplain areas. Water levels continue to slowly rise in the lower reaches of the Sydenham River. Due to risk of significant flooding in Wallaceburg, the McKeough Dam gates have been closed to divert floodwaters.”

The new bulletin was sent out shortly after 2 a.m. this morning.

A number of roads are impacted due to flooding.

Chatham-Kent:

– Booth Road from Langstaff line to McCreary line

– Langstaff line from Kimball road to Richardson Road

– Otter Line in Wallaceburg

St. Clair Township:

– Stanley Line east of Kimball Road

– Pretty Road north of McCallum Line

Enniskillen Township:

– Durham Creek Line at Black Ash Line

– Fairweather Road Between Rokeby Line and Shiloh Line

– Fairweather Road between Oil Springs Line and Aberfeldy Line

“River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion,” SCRCA officials stated.

“Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This message will remain in effect until Tuesday, January 14, 2020, unless otherwise updated.
