Budget open house being held in Wallaceburg

A public open house is being held in Wallaceburg on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 to discuss the 2020 Chatham-Kent budget.

The meeting will run from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Wallaceburg Municipal office, located at 786 Dufferin Avenue.

Wallaceburg Councillor Aaron Hall said feedback is welcomed and encouraged.

Staff presented the draft budget last week, which includes a proposed 4.99% tax increase.

“We’re starting at a 4.99% tax impact out of the gate,” Hall said on social media.

“We have a lot of work to do in the next few weeks. There is plenty of options to provide input throughout the process.”

From 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. those in attendance have the opportunity to have one-on-one discussions with administration and Council.

From 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., there will be a brief presentation and question and answer period.

A similar meeting is being held in Blenheim on Wednesday evening as well and the final opportunity to attend one of these meetings is on Thursday, January 23 at the Active Lifestyle Centre, located at 20 Merritt Avenue in Chatham. Meetings were held in Tilbury and Thamesville on Tuesday.

“Equipped with the feedback from these Community Consultation Meetings, Council will meet as Budget Committee to deliberate the 2020 draft budget,” Chatham-Kent staff said.

The budget committee deliberations are being held January 28, 29 and 30 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Council Chambers on the second floor of the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre, 315 King Street West, Chatham.

Time will be made available for any individual or group wishing to make a presentation on budget issues at these meetings, Municipal officials say.

Individual presentations will be limited to five minutes.

Anyone wishing to make a presentation is asked to sign up at the door upon arrival.
