From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin
Back during this past Christmas season my family enjoyed a wonderful evening out attending a high-quality presentation of Handel’s Messiah.
It was glorious, let me tell you!
Unfortunately, the evening was marred somewhat by two very rude and insensitive ladies who were seated in the row behind us.
They were whispering and cackling continuously, applauding and cheering inappropriately at awkward times and spoiling the performance for all those in earshot of their childish antics.
At one point my daughter turned around in her seat and politely asked them to refrain from talking.
Her request was met with belittling and mocking as they continued their rudeness.
At the intermission, we were quick to complain to an usher, only to find out that we were the 4th ones to make such a complaint.
The guilty pair were spoken to and behaved reasonably in the second half, although they wore frowns that suggested they had been hard done by.
The Bible teaches a much better way.
Romans 12:10 says, “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honour one another above yourselves.”
When we choose to honour one another above ourselves we consider what’s best for the other person first, not what’s best for me.
Here’s another word for it: RESPECT.
The late Aretha Franklin said it best in her 1967 song, ‘Respect’: ‘R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me.’
That’s your assignment this week, to find out what respect means to those around you at the office, the factory, your school, and yes, in your family.
