SCRCA issues flood watch, backflow expected in Wallaceburg

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority have issued a flood watch, as strong winds and wave action, possible shoreline erosion and backflow in Wallaceburg is expected.

“Strong westerly/northwesterly winds are forecasted to start early Tuesday morning and continue through the day before subsiding late Tuesday/early Wednesday,” SCRCA officials said in a media release.

“Gusts are anticipated to be upwards of 70 km/h with sustained winds of 40 km/h. The Lake Huron shoreline is anticipated to experience wind-driven wave action with possible erosion and minor flooding, particularly in the Old Lakeshore Road area of Brights Grove.”

SCRCA officials added: “Winds from a westerly direction are also anticipated to cause a backwater effect in the Wallaceburg area, slowing the flow of water out of the Sydenham River and contributing to elevated water levels. Residents in this area may experience minor flooding.”

River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion, SCRCA official say.

Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water.

Children and pets should be kept away from the water, SCRCA officials added.

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This message will remain in effect until Wednesday, April 22, 2020, unless otherwise updated.
