McCarter named rookie of the year for Nipissing Lakers

Megan McCarter, a former Wallaceburg Tartans basketball star, has received some hardware from her new school.

The Nipissing Lakers women’s basketball team announced on Monday, April 20 that McCarter was named rookie of the year for the squad.

The team made the announcement during a series of Virtual Athletic Awards posted on their Twitter feed. Watch the post for their women’s basketball team below:

In her first year with the Lakers, McCarter played in 22 games, while starting 21 of them.

She averaged 6.2 points per game, 4.2 rebounds per game and 1 assist per game. She shot 28.9% from the field, 13.1% from three and 80% from the free throw line.

McCarter was a stand-out student athlete at Wallaceburg District Secondary School during her high school years.

Last year she was named as the Jack Parry Award winner across Chatham-Kent.

“Megan is a dedicated student athlete who has left her mark on WDSS,” Janine Day, the health and physical education curriculum leader at the school, told the Sydenham Current last year.

“She leaves Tartan Athletics with LKSSAA, SWOSSAA championships as well as the first ever OFSAA gold medal for a senior girls basketball team. Megan is involved in all facets of school life and has achieved honors all four years at WDSS.”

McCarter was also named as the 2019 Wallaceburg Sports Hall of Fame / Ray Aarssen Scholarship winner.
