Letter: WDSS 70th Anniversary event cancelled

Due to the COVID-19 virus, the WDSS 70th Anniversary Reunion that was to have taken place on the weekend of July 3, 4 and 5 has been cancelled.

This announcement will come as no surprise to any of you who have shown interest in attending.

After all, even the Calgary Stampede has been sacked for the first time in it’s 100+ year history.

Scheduled was a Friday evening opening ceremony with some surprises followed by a meet and greet out of at the Clubhouse at Baldoon.

A Saturday barbecue lunch was to be provided by the Knights of Columbus at the hall on Murray Street and Dave Babbitt’s Brass Factory were considering a band concert at the museum during the afternoon.

Our Saturday evening dinner/dances would have taken place at the UAW hall for former students from the decades up to 1979 with the 80’s and up at the CBD.

The caterers were all set and the ‘Weekenders’ and ‘Buckdenalli’ were on board for the music.

Sunday morning breakfast was to be hosted by the Clubhouse at Baldoon with the early afternoon Service of Praise taking place right there.

Of course, there were other incidentals to be ironed out but most of groundwork was all done.

We have appreciated all the support and positive feedback we have been getting over the past months and we’re sorry to disappoint.

It seemed that you all came to realize that everyone was welcome graduate or not, former student or not.

If you wanted to attend, we wanted you there!

We gave some consideration to postponing the reunion until fall but the prognosis for then isn’t encouraging.

Late in the year we will look at the possibility of holding a reunion next year and will certainly keep you all in the know.

In the meantime, stay home and stay safe.

Your WDSS 70th Anniversary Reunion Committee: Kim Thomaes, Mary VanDamme, Betty Tack, Barry McFadden, Mary Ellen Lusk, Grace Harvey, Sandra and Eric Johnston, Janice Gonyou, Bob Ricciotti, Gert McClure and Jim Hazzard
