Elbow grease

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Back in the 1980’s I worked as a busboy, and later as a waiter, in a fine-dining restaurant.

As head busboy, I was responsible for training the new recruits.

One of those at that time was a young girl who wasn’t always on the ball.

For that reason she became an easy target for teasing and practical jokes.

My friend and I once sent her to the stock room to get a can of elbow grease, which she couldn’t find after 20 minutes of searching!

It was a busy Saturday night and our manager was not happy that she had disappeared on a mission that led to nowhere!

She wasn’t fired because she was the owner’s daughter!

But seriously, though, do you approach your tasks with elbow grease?

That is, do you put a concerted effort into your work that would complement the employees around you and be an asset to the employer you are working for?

Anything less is really not an honest day’s work for an honest day’s wage, is it?

You may think your job doesn’t pay that well and so you are not required to give a maximum effort.

However, a person of integrity and character does his or her best regardless of the situation.

Here is what the apostle Paul had to say in 2 Thessalonians 3:10: “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.”

I think you’ll find more promotions and greater satisfaction in your future if you learn to apply more elbow grease.

But don’t go looking for it in a can.

It’s tucked away in your willingness to work hard!
