Going ‘blue’ for World Alzheimer’s Day

To mark World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21, 2020, the Alzheimer Society of Chatham-Kent (ASCK) is going blue with local real estate brokerage, Nest Realty, to raise awareness and funds.

In Chatham-Kent (C-K), over 3,000 people are living with dementia, ASCK officials say.

“While the risk of dementia doubles every five years after age 65, dementia is not a natural part of aging,” ASCK officials said in a press release.

“Dementia can occur in people in their 50s, 40s, and even 30s, and it can be present in the brain for up to 25 years before symptoms occur. The stigma linked to dementia remains existent as the prevalence of dementia steadily increases.”

According to Alzheimer Research, 87 per cent of caregivers wished others understood the realities of caring for someone with this condition, ASCK officials say.

“Of these, two-thirds find the experience of caring for someone with dementia to be isolating,” ASCK officials added.

“Nest Realty believes in giving back to Chatham-Kent, especially to organizations who rely on people from the community to help support them. The Nest Realty team also has many individuals in their lives who live with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.”

With World Alzheimer’s Day being recognized on Monday, September 21, Nest Realty could not think of a more suitable organization to support.

“Another fundraising event was originally planned for this year with Nest Realty but it had to be postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” ASCK officials say.

“However, that did not stop Nest Realty from shifting gears and offering a different fundraiser to benefit ASCK. The exciting fundraiser that they have created is the ‘Go Blue or Go Home’ raffle. C-K residents can purchase tickets to win one of three incredible blue-themed prizes with a $5,000+ total value.”

Tickets go on sale on Monday, September 21 and are $10 for one ticket or $20 for three tickets.

Tickets can be purchased the following ways:

– E-transfer to becca@nestrealty.ca with the password “goblue” in lowercase lettering. Please include your name, home address, cell number, email address, number of tickets requested and total paid. A picture of your tickets will then be emailed back to you or you can pick them up at the Nest Realty office located at 5 Llewellyn Street.

– By cash at the Nest Realty office located at the aforementioned address. Office hours are Monday to Thursdays from 9:30am to 4:00pm. A mask must be worn upon entering the office.

“As a bonus, C-K residents can have a chance at winning a cash prize of $100,” ASCK officials say.

“All they need to do is post a picture of themselves wearing blue, on Facebook or Instagram, on Monday, September 21. They must include the hashtag #GoBlueforAlz and tag Nest Realty and ASCK in their post. Winner will be drawn at random and announced the following day.”

C-K residents can also support those affected by dementia in our community by changing their social media profile pictures to blue, learning about the disease to shatter myths, planting forget-me-not seeds in their gardens, or by hosting their own fundraiser, in accordance with the COVID-19 health and safety regulations.

“Whatever you do, make sure it’s blue,” ASCK officials added.
