Home builder looking to raise funds for homelessness

Winter is hard enough as it is, but with a global pandemic in full swing, a local home builder wants to help the homeless through the holidays.

Maple City Homes is challenging the Chatham-Kent community to help raise $100,000 for homelessness initiatives in Chatham-Kent.

For every $3 raised in Chatham-Kent, they’ll kick in $1 up to a maximum of $25,000.

“We’re challenging our tradespeople and suppliers to keep up with CK – if the community raises $75,000 this holiday season, we’ll make it an even $100,000 with a $25,000 donation,” stated Trevor Mailloux, General Manager of Maple City Homes Ltd., in a press release.

“We’re home builders, but we know there are a lot of people out there experiencing homelessness, and we want to help in any way we can.”

Robb Nelson, President of Maple City Homes Ltd. and Director on the Board of United Way of Chatham-Kent says significant changes and this most recent movement within the local United Way has put the focus back on relationships and the importance of coming together.

“Since its inception, Maple City Homes has brought together builders, investors, developers, local trades, and local suppliers and we’re building neighbourhoods,” Nelson said in a media release.

“We’re challenging the community to come together to make sure no one is left behind this winter.”

While the Chatham-Kent community has shown many times that it can come together in big ways, United Way of Chatham-Kent CEO Steve Pratt says homelessness is an issue that is bigger than it may appear.

“Homelessness has always existed in Chatham-Kent, but it has grown significantly since March, and we need a lot of volunteers, resources, and help to make sure that no one is left behind,” Pratt stated in a media release.

“There are currently upwards of 200 individuals experiencing homelessness in our community. We are supporting groups like R.O.C.K. Missions, The Sandwich Guys, and Chatham Hope Haven so that they can continue to do outreach and make connections with our friends on the streets.”

The goal of this challenge is to support those same groups and many more that provide services and resources to the homeless on a daily basis.
