$250,000 damage after apartment fire in Tilbury

An investigation has been launched after an early morning fire at an apartment building in Tilbury.

Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services officials say crews from Tilbury, Merlin and Wheatley “worked quickly to contain a fire” that broke out at an apartment at 33 Pearl Street in Tilbury at 12:38 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2020.

“Two people were rescued from their balconies,” fire officials said in a media release.

“There were two cats that perished.”

Firefighters were able to revive two other cats.

“There were no other injuries reported,” fire officials say.

Water and smoke damage throughout the building has resulted in damages estimated at $250,000, fire officials say.

The fire is currently under investigation by Chatham-Kent fire investigators.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified as well, fire officials say.
