New year, new goals

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Okay, so the end of the year has finally come and for many of us, we are more than ready to put 2020 in the rearview mirror.

As we contemplate the year ahead let’s consider the sage advice of the dynamic father and son duo, Dick and Rick Hoyt.

They said, “Most people fail in life, not because they aim too high and miss, but because they aim too low and hit.”

Dick has received world renown for his commitment to compete in running races of all distances, from the 5 k to the marathon, as well as Ironman triathlons, while pushing his quadriplegic son in them all.

When Rick was born doctors told Dick and his wife that they needed to put Rick into an institution and move on with their life raising their other two sons.

They refused and decided to bring him home and include him as a part of their family.

In 1977 Rick asked his dad to push him in a 5-mile benefit race for a lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident.

They finished second last but then Rick told his dad an astonishing thing: “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not disabled.”

This led to over 1,000 races together of various sorts, including 37 Boston Marathons, as well as a 3,735 mile trek across the United States in 45 days with Dick running and biking his way across with Rick along for the ride.

Rick was once asked if he could give his father one thing, what would it be? Rick replied, “The thing I would most like is for my dad to sit in the chair and I would push him for once.”

Folks, I think some of us are aiming way too low, content to swim in the shallow end of Safety Harbour instead of launching out into the deep where goals are positioned.

After the apostle Peter and his companions fished all night and caught nothing Jesus told them in Luke 5:4, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

The result was a load of fish so huge that the boat began to sink!

I think you get the picture.

Let’s not be afraid to aim high and miss.

One of these times we’ll gain new ground and won’t look back.

Maybe there are people in your life who need a breakthrough and that breakthrough is on the end of one of your ‘aim high’ endeavours.

Go for it!
