Draft 2021 budget presented in Chatham-Kent, 3.96% tax increase proposed

The 2021 draft budget was presented virtually by Municipality of Chatham-Kent staff on Wednesday evening, January 13, 2021.

The initial tax increase being recommended by staff sits at 3.96%.

During their presentation on Wednesday, administration outlined a number of tasks they were faced with when preparing this year’s draft budget.

“Meeting a budget target of CPI (1.0%) for operational needs and approval for infrastructure spending with the currently approved financing model,” staff said in their presentation.

“Addressing the 0.64% Provincial transfer to property taxpayers. Funding 2020 base budget requirement of 0.98% that were funded from one-time sources in the 2020 budget.”

Administration added: “Continued funding of the approved Financing Plan for the 2017 Asset Management Plan – a recommended 1% increase in infrastructure spending, plus the 3rd year of the 4th year storm sewer infrastructure funding plan of $675,000 and year 1 of 3 funding in the amount of $100,000 for the new growth plan.”

In addition to Wednesday’s session, community consultation meetings will be broadcast on the Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s Facebook Live feed:

– Tuesday, January 19 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

– Wednesday, January 20 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

– Thursday, January 21 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Budget Committee deliberations are scheduled for January 27, 28 and February 2 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. live on YourTV as well as live streamed on the YourTV YouTube channel and the municipal Facebook page

Written presentations of up to five minutes are welcome each evening.

Submissions must be made by emailing ckfps@chatham-kent.ca before 3 p.m. each day.

Deputations on specific topics generating significant community interest will be scheduled and announced prior to the Budget Committee’s deliberations.
