Police urge caution when going out on the ice

After some residents became stranded on the ice in Mitchell’s Bay, the Chatham-Kent Police Service are urging the public to be cautious when going out on the ice.

“Yesterday morning, police received several reports of individuals stranded in Mitchell’s Bay after a large section of ice broke away,” police officials said in a press release.

Through coordinated efforts with the Ontario Provincial Police and Coast Guard, all parties were safely rescued. Police would like to remind everyone to use caution when going out on the ice. Stay close to shore and do not go out alone.”

On Saturday, OPP officials said at approximately 11 a.m. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Chatham-Kent officers, Chatham-Kent Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) were called to assist people who had become stranded on the ice on Lake St. Clair while ice fishing.

Three people were air lifted to safety while others managed to return to shore on their own.

“Police are advising the public that due to fluctuating temperatures the ice is unstable,” OPP officials said on Saturday.

“Large cracks have formed creating gaps in the ice making a very dangerous situation. Police asking the public to use extreme caution on the ice and ensure they have proper safety equipment and a communication device.”
