First COVID-19 death reported at Fairfield Park, 7th overall in C-K

The first COVID-19 death at Fairfield Park in Wallaceburg has been confirmed by local public health officials.

“The most recent death was a Fairfield Park resident,” Jeff Moco, a spokesperson for CK Public Health, told the Sydenham Current on Monday, February 8, 2021.

“She was a female in her 90s.”

This is the seventh COVID-19 death in Chatham-Kent since the pandemic began.

COVID-19 was not the cause of death for another Fairfield Park resident, who died last week, public health officials said. While the resident had recently tested positive for the virus, they had died of other underlying causes.

Fairfield Park officials say there are currently 66 active cases linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at the Wallaceburg home.

“Public Health has confirmed that our total number of active cases at Fairfield Park is currently 66,” Fairfield Park officials posted on their website on Monday.

“This includes 33 active residents and 33 active staff.”

Fairfield Park officials added: “We are continuing with our weekly surveillance testing of residents and staff today and we continue to have daily meetings with our community partners to discuss the status of our home. We are pleased to be able to collaborate closely with these partners including CK Public Health, CK Health Alliance, the Ministry of Long-Term Care, our LHIN, Ontario Health and our local EMS.”

Fairfield Park officials say they “are also pleased to share” that the Red Cross was in the home this past weekend.

“They are impressed with the infection prevention and control measures currently in place,” Fairfield Park officials say.

“They will do a final assessment today and then a team of 10 Red Cross staff will be joining our team on Thursday, February 11, to support our care team further. We are incredibly grateful for their help during this time and we want to assure our community that we are doing everything we can to ensure the continued health and safety of everyone at Fairfield Park. Stay strong, and stay well.”

CK Public Health officials say a total of 92 positive COVID-19 cases are linked to the outbreak, which was first declared on January 10, 2021.
