Toughing it out

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

I came across an excellent quote recently that made me sit back and think.

A man I know has a plaque on the wall of his office that says, “Do not pray for an easy life, pray to be a strong person.”

Like I said, this quote made me sit back and think.

After the year we just went through with all of its challenges, and now more to deal with in 2021, there is a temptation to just take the route of least resistance.

But let’s be honest here.

The world already has enough people vying for the easy life.

We need people with the kind of tenacity that the apostle Paul displayed.

Here is what he said in 1 Corinthians 9:25-27: “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore, I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”

Being a strong person takes a focused determination to push past failure and discouragement and keep going until your goal is reached.

It means discipline when laziness is easier.

It means sacrifice when you are tempted to focus on yourself.

It means being available for others when everyone else has vacated the premises.

If our communities are to make it through these difficult and challenging times then we will need many to take up the resolve to be strong in times where others are weak.

Are you up for it?
