Winning the battle against yourself

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

We face a lot of battles in this life, and some of them can be quite formidable.

But there is a key battle that must be won if we are to achieve success against all the others, and that battle is against yourself.

Former United States president, Harry S. Truman, once said, “In reading the lives of great men, I found that the first victory they won was over themselves… self-discipline with all of them came first.”

That, of course, is easier said than done.

It takes a lot strength and will power to walk in self-discipline.

One way to achieve success at self-discipline is to be accountable to another person close to you who will not let you get away with laziness.

I cherish the accountability people in my life because they are brutally honest with me.

They bring correction in love but they don’t mince words if an issue arises that needs to be addressed.

Proverbs 27:17 says this: “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”

Do you know what happens when iron sharpens iron?

Sparks fly, that’s what!

However, without those sparks the tool cannot become sharp.

I once had to confront a friend about an inappropriate post that he shared on his Facebook page.

I was nervous about speaking with him about it but I prayed and then proceeded in a compassionate manner.

As it turned out he was quite convicted and took measures to remove the post and also to refrain from any further inappropriate behavior.

So, let’s get on with those battles we have to deal with, but make sure the first one is ourselves!
