Rising water levels on the Sydenham River, potential for minor flooding

High amounts of rainfall in the past 24 hours has caused rising water levels on the Sydenham River and some minor flooding.

St. Clair Region Conservation Authority officials updated a flood watch on Friday, March 26, 2021, which has originally been issued on Thursday.

“An intense low pressure system brought variable amounts of precipitation to the region overnight, averaging between 30-40 mm with some locations experiencing much higher amounts,” SCRCA officials say.

“Water levels on the Sydenham River are rising quickly from the influx of precipitation to the system, with some locations anticipated to see minor flooding into natural floodplain areas, farmland and parks.”

SCRCA officials added: “A Gale Wind Warning remains in effect for Southern Lake Huron. Northwesterly winds gusting upwards of 80 km/h early this afternoon are predicted to subside by this evening. Waves are predicted to build three to four metres in height during this event, subsiding with the wind in the afternoon.”

Residents along the Lake Huron shoreline can anticipate water levels to rise due to storm surge, with the potential for minor flooding in natural floodplain areas, officials say.

“Shoreline erosion is possible with the increased wave action, particularly in the Old Lakeshore Road area of Brights Grove,” SCRCA officials say.

“Residents are reminded to avoid shorelines, watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise, officials added.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This flood watch will remain in effect until Sunday, March 28, 2021, unless otherwise updated.
