Chatham couple wins $500,000 lottery prize

Life is a little more ‘grand’ for Harjit and Marilou Singh of Chatham.

OLG officials say they matched all five main numbers to win a second prize of $25,000 a year for life with Daily Grand in the April 12, 2021 draw.

The pair took the lump sum prize of $500,000.

Harjit Singh says he has been a loyal lottery player for over 30 years.

“This is my largest win,” he said in a media release.

The night before the married couple discovered their big win, Marilou Singh said “If we win the lottery tonight, let’s renovate the house.”

Harjit Singh checked the winning numbers online and noticed they looked familiar.

“I called Marilou over to come see,” he said.

“We checked it together using the OLG Lottery App and it was the happiest moment. I was so excited I couldn’t sleep.”

Marilou Singh, an early childhood education student, says she has always dreamed about what she could do if she won the lottery.

“Now we can make plans,” she said.

“It’s incredible.”

The couple plans to renovate their home and share their winnings with loved ones, OLG officials say.

In accordance with government-issued lockdown measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, OLG is currently limiting the number of in-person prize claim appointments at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to only those that require a face-to-face interview.

Customers with prizes over $50,000 are asked to call 1-800-387-0098 to discuss available prize claim options.

Prize claims up to $49,999.90 should continue to be submitted by mail.

Daily Grand is a national lottery game with a top prize of $1,000 a day for life for matching the five main numbers plus the Grand Number.

The second prize is $25,000 a year for life for matching the five main numbers.

Daily Grand is $3 per play and draws take place on Mondays and Thursdays.

The winning ticket was purchased at Petro Canada on Park Avenue in Chatham, OLG officials added.
