Fire at Polish Canadian Club in Chatham

Update #1: Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services officials have released more details about the fire at 285 Inshes Avenue in Chatham.

“Crews from station #1 and #2 Chatham responded at 9:08 a.m. this morning to a large fire at 285 Inshes Ave.,” fire officials said in a media release on Wednesday, May 19, 2021.

“They arrived on scene to find a fully developed fire in unoccupied building already spreading rapidly to the neighbouring restaurant. Firefighters worked quickly to stop the blaze from spreading to any other business.”

Fire officials say Station #15 – Raleigh North was called to assist with the fire.

“Operations continue, using two aerial trucks and five lines to control the fire,” fire officials say.

“There are currently almost 50 firefighters on scene. Along with CK EMS, providing rehab for firefighters and CK police, who have evacuated a number of homes in the area. There is still heavy smoke coming from the structure, if there is smoke in your neighbourhood, close all doors and windows.”

Fire officials say the OFM has been called and there are no injuries at this time.

The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation by the CKFES prevention team.

Fire operations will continue for some time, fire officials added.
