Reported gas leak in downtown Wheatley

Chatham Kent Fire Service crews from Station #20 in Wheatley and Station #19 in Tilbury attended 16 Erie Street North in downtown Wheatley on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 just before 2:30 p.m. for a reported gas leak.

“Windsor Hazmat team attended yesterday evening to assist,” Municipal officials said in a media release issued on Thursday morning.

“Homes in the area have been evacuated. Personnel from from CK Police Service, CK EMS and Enbridge also attended. The Provincial Ministry of Environment was also on scene and the Ministry of Natural Resources has been informed.”

The public is being asked to avoid the area, Municipal officials added.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials said on Wednesday evening that Erie Street in Wheatley between Talbot and Elm is closed as emergency crews investigated the possible gas leak.

More information on the incident will be made available during a media conference on Thursday morning.
