Update: Sexual assault arrest in Chatham

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: As previously released, on June 16, 2021 police responded to the report of a sexual assault under the Keil Street Bridge in Chatham.

Through investigation, police learned that a 16-year-old Chatham girl was sitting under the bridge, awaiting the arrival of a friend, when an unknown man stopped to talk to her.

The man sat down, touched the girl’s thigh and grabbed her wrist in an attempt to pull her closer to him.

The man fled as the girl’s friend arrived.

Yesterday morning, a 40-year-old Chatham man attended police headquarters and turned himself in.

The man was charged with assault and sexual assault.

He was released pending a future court date of August 6, 2021.

Police believe this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety.
