Wallaceburg Museum Seeking Curatorial Assistant

The Wallaceburg and District Museum is seeking a candidate for the full time contract position of Curatorial Assistant.

The Curatorial Assistant (CA) will be responsible for researching, sorting and safely storing the Museum’s hanging textile collection storage. The CA will be expected to research proper handling and storage of various types of textile artifacts by using Museum resources, books, and external resources, such as the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI). The CA will be reporting to the Curator/Manager. The CA will sort through the textiles to identify artifacts that are duplicates, damaged or do not meet the museum’s collection mandate. After the artifacts have been processed, the CA will make recommendations to the Curator/Manager on how to improve the space. It will be expected that the CA will be asked to assist in other projects in the Museum as needed. Should the CA complete their assigned project they will continue their work term on a different but similar project Should the Museum need to close its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CA will shift to conducting textile research and other projects remotely. The Museum will ensure that the CA has the resources and tools necessary to do work from home.

Our Ideal candidate is a student studying history, museum studies or related fields. The candidate should have an interest in historic textiles. This position will require the candidate to be flexible moving between projects as needed and work cooperatively with volunteers. Inventory, Data Entry, and Artifact handling skills are an asset. Maintaining the safety of Volunteers and Staff, the Candidate will be required to work indoors with a face mask and gloves and should be comfortable working in such conditions.
