4th COVID-19 death on Walpole Island

A fourth person from Walpole Island has died from COVID-19.

“As many community members have noted, the stats for Walpole Island indicate that our community has suffered an additional loss due to COVID,” officials with the Walpole Island Health Centre said in a media release issued on Wednesday, July 14, 2021.

“The Health Centre staff has followed up with this unique situation and offer our condolences to the family. We would like to remind our community members that, although we are progressing through the “re-opening stage” post lockdown, the pandemic is not over. The virus is still circulating, and the delta variant has been detected in Chatham-Kent.”

Walpole Island Health Centre officials added: “Many of our community members are fully vaccinated and have some protection from the COVID variants, but we must remain cautious as vaccines have not yet been approved for our children. A headache, runny nose and slight cough are symptoms of a common cold, and they are also symptoms of a COVID infection. Anyone who is experiencing these symptoms, please be tested. We ask that community members continue to follow good public health practices of social distancing, using hand sanitizer and wearing a mask.”

In their update on Wednesday, Walpole Island officials said there are zero active cases on COVID-19 on the First Nation reserve.

Since the pandemic began in March of 2020, a total of 175 positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed on Walpole, 1212 community members have been tested for the virus and 171 cases have been resolved.
