Watershed conditions statement issued, up to 65 mm of rain expected in Wallaceburg & Dresden

The St. Clair Region Conservation authority has issued a watershed conditions statement, as a special weather statement is in place for Wallaceburg and Dresden and upwards of 65 mm rainfall is expected in the next 24 hours.

SCRCA officials say there is a risk of overland flow, flash flooding, the potential for ponding and minor flooding into natural floodplains.

“A low pressure system tracking into Southern Ontario is predicted to bring variable amounts of rainfall across the region over the next 24 hours, with forecasts predicting 15-25 mm of rain in the northern reaches of the watershed and 30-65 mm of rain in the lower reaches near Wallaceburg and Dresden,” SCRCA officials say.

“Rain is anticipated to be heavy at times and amounts may vary between locations, particularly those experiencing convective systems (thunderstorms). High intensity rainfall has the potential to exceed drainage basin infiltration rates which can lead to urban flooding of roads. Intense rainfall may also lead to overland flow and scouring of fields, ponding in low-lying areas, and minor flooding into natural floodplain areas and parks.”

SCRCA officials added: “Residents may experience a sharp rise in riverine water levels due to the high intensity and short duration of this event. Residents are reminded to avoid shorelines, watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely, SCRCA officials added.

This message will remain in effect until Monday, July 19, 2021, unless otherwise updated.
