Hydrogen sulphide detector activated, some homes & businesses evacuated in Wheatley

Chatham-Kent fire officials tweeted on Monday morning that crews responded to 15 Erie St N, formally the Pogue, in Wheatley with reports that the hydrogen sulfide detector had activated just after 8 a.m.

Firefighters from Wheatley – Station 20 & Tilbury – Station 19 are currently on scene, along with police, EMS, Entegrus and Enbridge.

Fire officials say Erie St N between Talbot St. and Elm St. and Talbot St. E between Erie St. to Little St. have been closed off.

Homes and business in those areas are also being evacuated as a precaution.

“Investigations continue, please avoid the area,” fire officials say.

The Windsor Hazmat team is on route to the scene, fore officials say.

The Provincial Emergency Operation Centre has been contacted to request assistance from provincial partners, fore officials added.
