SCRCA issues flood outlook

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority issued a flood outlook on Friday, December 3, 2021.

“A low pressure system moving into Ontario is forecast to bring 15-20 mm of rain across the watershed on Sunday,” SCRCA officials say.

“If received, the rain could further elevate high water levels and minor flooding from the recent snowpack loss, pushing water into natural floodplain areas, parks and farmland. Roads may become impacted by rising water levels, in particular Pretty Road near Black Creek in St. Clair Township.”

Winds are anticipated to be south/southwest Sunday evening, gusting upwards of 70 km/h before subsiding overnight into early Monday morning, SCRCA officials added.

“Winds are forecast to become west/southwest early Monday, with gusts increasing mid-morning to 75 km/h and are anticipated to climb upwards of 85 km/h mid-afternoon, continuing into the evening before subsiding,” SCRCA officials say.

“Residents along the Lake St. Clair shoreline may experience storm surge, increased wave action and potential minor flooding and erosion. Individuals are reminded to avoid shorelines, watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise, officials added.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This message will remain in effect until Monday, December 6, 2021, unless otherwise updated.
