COVID-19 numbers and hospitalizations rise in Chatham-Kent

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit has changed the way their daily COVID-19 status update is being presented.

“Please note the number of active/resolved cases, exposures and risk factors are no longer being reported due to changing isolation requirements, case and contact management and related date entry practices,” CK Public Health officials said on their “current situation” page on their website on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.

Public health officials say seven more people have been hospitalized since the last update on Monday, increasing the total COVID-19 hospitalizations to 31.

85 new COVID-19 cases have been reported since the last update, increasing the total number of cases to 4,084 since the pandemic began.

CK Public Health officials added the first initial screening results, indicating suspect Omicron variant, have been received recently.

“We can assume Omicron to be the predominant circulating variant of concern in Chatham-Kent,” public health officials said on Tuesday.

“Not all specimens can be screened and only a sample of specimens will undergo further sequencing, therefore variant lineage may be presumed based on the initial screening results.”

Public health officials say four outbreaks are active across Chatham-Kent:

– An outbreak at Hudson Manor in Tilbury, declared on January 3, 2022, involves two cases.

– An outbreak at Tilbury Manor Nursing Home, declared on January 2, 2022, involves two cases.

– An outbreak at Riverview Gardens in Chatham, declared on December 21, 2021, involves two cases.

– An outbreak at an un-named manufacturing workplace, declared on December 2, 2021, involves 18 cases.

Since the pandemic began in March of 2020, a total of 30 Chatham-Kent residents have died from COVID-19.
