OPP investigating million-dollar copper wire theft in St. Clair Township

OPP officials allege: Police are asking for the public’s help identifying those responsible for stealing roughly $1 million worth of copper wire from a business in St. Clair Township.

Members of the Lambton County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were dispatched shortly before 7 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2026, to a reported theft from a business on Oil Springs Line between St. Clair Parkway and Greenfield Road.

Police say the theft occurred sometime between 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, and the morning of Aug. 17. Investigators believe the individual or individuals responsible cut a locked gate on the property’s perimeter before entering and stealing spools of copper wire, with an estimated value of $1,000,000.

Investigators are also looking for a vehicle believed to have been used in the theft, described as a 2007 white International model 40S heavy truck. The truck had previously been reported stolen out of Sarnia on Aug. 2, 2026.

Police are urging scrap metal dealers and recycling facilities to contact the Lambton County OPP if they receive a large quantity of copper wire, saying the information could help identify stolen property and those responsible for recent copper wire thefts in the area.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area, or who has dash camera, security camera or other information that could assist, is asked to contact the Lambton County OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, where tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
