Focus on the good

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

I came across this quote recently from a daily email that I received from former MLB manager, Clint Hurdle.

Here is what it said: “Your time is better spent championing good ideas than tearing down bad ones. The best thing that can happen to a bad idea is that it is forgotten. The best thing that can happen to a good idea is that it is shared. Feed the good ideas and let the bad ideas die of starvation.”

One day, the apostle John had a bad idea and needed Jesus to steer his direction away from that and over to a good idea.

Here is the account of their conversation in Mark 9:38-40: “’Teacher,’ said John, ‘we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he was not one of us.’ ‘Do not stop him,’ Jesus said. ‘No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us.’”

John was focused on tearing down the efforts of someone whom he knew little about, while Jesus sought to make the most of the situation.

John clearly learned this lesson because he went on to become a great leader in the early church and brought wisdom and counsel to many.

We live in a world where there are many different ideas floating around out there.

Some of these are quite good, and worthy of our attention, but others stand out for their negative leanings.

We cannot resolve every issue, although some effort can bring merit.

However, spending time circulating the good ideas will widen their impact and help many in the process.

What good ideas have you heard of lately?

What are you doing to spread the word?
