Snow squall watch issued for Chatham-Kent

Environment Canada has issued a snow squall watch across Chatham-Kent.

Forecasters say lake effect snow squalls off Lake Huron are expected to begin this evening, January 19, 2022, into Thursday night, January 20, 2022.

Hazards, include local snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 cm and significantly reduced visibilities due to heavy snow and local blowing snow.

The snow is expected this evening into Thursday night.

“Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common,” Environment Canada officials say.

“Travel may be hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. If you become stranded in a vehicle do not leave. The vehicle offers a form of protection from the cold. A single person walking through the snow is harder to find than a stranded car or truck.”

Forecasters added: “Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. For information on emergency plans and kits go to http://www.getprepared.gc.ca.”
