‘Extreme weather’ takes down hydro poles, knocks out power just outside of Wallaceburg

Hydro One officials say 150 customers remain without power just outside of Wallaceburg, after a Wednesday evening storm ripped through the area.

Hydro One officials say the cause of the outage is due to “extreme weather conditions.”

The estimated time of restoration is Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 10 p.m., Hydro One officials say.

In a social media post on Wednesday evening, Chatham-Kent Police Service officials were asking the public to avoid the area.

“Due to a weather event, please avoid Base Line between Albert Street and Prince Albert Road in Wallaceburg,” police officials say.

“The road will be closed until further notice. Approximately 150 hydro customers have been affected. Hydro crews are currently working in the area. For their safety and yours, please do not drive around any road closed signs.”

The road remained closed as of Thursday morning.

A special weather statement from Environment Canada had been in effect across Chatham-Kent at the time.

Forecasters had said strong easterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h and local power outages were anticipated.

Several hydro poles were spotted toppled over on Thursday morning as well.

We’ll provide more details as they become available.
