Mental Health Week was the focus of a flag-raising and barbeque at the Civic Centre this morning.
The 11th annual event was organized by the Mental Health Network of Chatham-Kent.
Mayor Darrin Canniff, joined by councillors Karen Kirkwood-Whyte and Amy Finn, praised the efforts of the network and the positive trend toward ending the stigma of mental health issues.
He noted that community support is a key factor in encouraging people to come forward and seek support in the same way people do regarding their physical health needs, Municipal officials said in a media release.
The network provides a range of community-based services for people who have a mental illness including:
– leisure and recreational activities,
– peer support,
– family supports
– educational groups
– self-help groups
– advocacy
Its goal is to provide support to those whose lives are affected by mental illness through their journey of hope and recovery.
