Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton posted a photo of himself and Crawford on social media.

“So sad to hear of the passing of former liberal MP Rex Crawford,” McNaughton tweeted.

“Rex was a good friend, a mentor, and a respected public servant. He was a true man of the people. May he rest in peace. Prayers for his family.”

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff also offered his condolences.

“Rex Crawford lived a life of public service,” Mayor Canniff stated in a media release.

“From a township council member to a federal member of Parliament, his strong voice and his commitment to the people he served is something anyone would be proud of. You knew where you stood with Rex. He had strong opinions, but he always wanted to hear the other side of the issue.”

Mayor Canniff added: “He could disagree with you and still respect you. We need more of that in today’s society. His ability to connect with people on any issue is something everyone in public service should aspire to. From the fields of Dover Township to the halls of Parliament to the international stage, Rex was always a person you could count on. His experience as an original member of Chatham-Kent Council helped us through some very turbulent times. On behalf of council, I offer his family our condolences.”

Chatham Councillor Doug Sulman, who served with Crawford on the first Chatham-Kent Council, added: “I knew Rex for more than 40 years. You knew that he said what he meant and meant what he said. He was a great defender of his constituents wherever he served.”

Crawford’s funeral service will be conducted at the Knox Presbyterian Church on Duncan Street in Wallaceburg on Monday, July 25 at 3 p.m. with visitation one hour prior.
